True South Bookstore Closes Doors in Bed-Stuy

Bed-Stuy cultural institution shuts down over the weekend.

On Sunday, True South Bookstore, a cultural institution in Bed-Stuy, closed its doors for the final time.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, the store could not raise the money stay open after its owner, Monroe Brown, suffered a stroke over the summer.

Ajamu Brown, Monroe's son, worked to keep the store afloat in the face of a huge rent increase and dwindling sales.

Ajamu wrote a plea for help from the community earlier this summer published on Bed-Stuy Patch, but according to the Daily News, the July fundraiser didn't bring in enough money to keep the shop afloat.

Ajamu also wrote that the shop's landlord had tried unsuccessfully to shutter the shop in July.
