The school emphasizes literature, language and technology. Each child is assigned a "house," a tradition of British and Caribbean origin. Each house is named for a famous author; the houses are "Alex Haley," "Maya Angelou," "John Steinbeck" and "George Orwell." The houses mix grade levels so the children can inspire and aspire. The students also participate in academic competitions, such as Spelling Bee's. The school has a boys and girls basketball team, a cheerleading squad and a robotics team.

"We want our students to feel that there is a support system for them, both emotionally and socially. We push an environment of competition and achievement," said Mr. Cooper, the school's principal.

DIVAS for Social Justice is a non-profit organization based in Bed-Stuy. The grassroots organization is dedicated toMore media literacy education, specifically focusing on programming for youth and senior citizens.
