Within New York State's Office of Children & Family Services (OCFS), there is a Division of Juvenile Justice andMore Opportunities for Youth. And within that department, there is the New York Development Center's City Challenge Program. It is a day placement program for juvenile delinquents that is run by the governor's office.

City Challenge is a three- to five-month community supervision program individually tailored to the risks and needs of each graduates of the Sergeant Henry Johnson Youth Leadership Academy (YLA). The program is operated in partnership with the Children's Aid Society of New York and includes an alternative school program, job placement and an independent living curriculum.

Bedford-Stuyvesant has two police precincts: 79 and 81. The New York City 79th Police Precinct is located at 263More Tompkins Ave., on the southeast corner of Tompkins and Greene Avenues. The commanding officer of the 79th precinct is Deputy Inspector Peter J. Bartoszek. The role of the police department in every neighborhood is to provide a safe environment for its residents, their guests and business owners. Each precinct accomplishes this through combatting violent crimes, narcotic sales and usage, and addressing issues that affect a person's quality of life. Precinct 79 holds its monthly meetings, which are open to the community, on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
