Heifer is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I've been "using" them for years in the sense of buying…Read More gifts for friends and family--you can buy part or all of an animal (for as cheap as $20 to as much as you can afford) in honor of your friend and it means that someone who needs the animal for their survival is actually getting the animal. And then if I feel like my friend might want something tangible, I might buy them a candle (if I've gotten a hive of bees) or a dozen eggs (if I bought a chicken) or a nice piece of goat cheese (if I bought part of a goat). But it's truly amazing how many people they've helped around the world to be able to support themselves with the animals, and then they have to "pass along the gift"--when their animal has an offspring, it's formally and ceremoniously handed along to another person in the community, and on and on through the generations. Sweet, eh?

I've been using Heifer for years as gifts to friends and family. Great organization.

I am right around the corner, and they used to do the same thing, dumping everything in front of the…Read More school. It was awful, and never stopped. I found reporting all suspicious activity and actually keeping a vigil stopped it. It took confronting people, reporting license plates and calling 911 and catching them in progress to stop it. You guys have got to be very aggressive have a phone tree amongst yourselves, and put up cameras. You'll find it is a small community of offenders, and they dump by word of mouth, one to the other. That being the case on Hancock St, as they got caught, busted, etc, they also passed that information amongst themselves too. And while we're at it, it needs to be said that this neighborhood belongs to the good proactive people and we need to ring 311 and 911 off the hook; that's how we cleaned up Hancock St; make it damn uncomfortable for them to exist hanging out on the corners, making reports when they're in the park after dark, and riding these dirt bikes thru the neighborhood. The precinct will become more proactive because all of our calls register at 1 Police Plaza, so the local commander has to act. You can remain anonymous in all cases. Another thing we did was get the police department and park department to come clean the park out every evening and lock the park. Unfortunately people have become complacent and there's activity past dusk over there. Last thing, when they have these parties on the sidewalk over at the park, call too.

OMG our block Dekalb Ave between Throop and Tompkins is going through the same thing an…Read More abandon lot. Someone left a dead dog in a black garbage bag two weeks ago and really wasn't noticed because a mattress was on top of it . The smell came and it was unreal. Complaints were made and the dog was removed on 8/7/12. About cleaning the lot out Sanitation said it is up to the owners, they do not handle clean ups anymore....what the hell! So I guess our block will have this problem for another three year.

My condolences to the Brownsville community on the lost of a great leader. I hope those that work…Read More with him will continue his legacy and don't give up

To the family of Greg Jackson:
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Death affects…Read More everyone on the face of this earth, yet when it touches us personally, few seek the comfort they search for. The unscriptual doctrines that are taught concerning death do not leave those grieving with comfort or a hope, but they do leave many with unanswered questions. The response that "God works in mysterious ways", does not satisfy the spiritual needs of those who are grieving (Matthew 5:3). However, many have found comfort in the pages of God's word the Bible (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). In God's word we find the promise that we can be reunited with our loved ones (John 5:28, 29, Acts 24:15). The Bible tells us where this happy reunion will take place (Psalm 37: 11, 29, Matthew 5:5). We are told why we die (Genesis 3:17-19, Romans 5:12), and that the God of the Bible will end death forever (1 Corinthians 15:26, Revelation 21:3, 4). In the model prayer, also called the lord's prayer, readers are taught to pray for God's Kingdom (Matthew 6:10). Learning the truth about the God of the Bible (Psalm 83:18, Revelation 4:11), God's Kingdom (Daniel 2:44), and the state of those who have died (Ecclesiastes 9:5), is the start to finding true comfort concerning loved ones who are sleeping in death, as well as satisfying answers to many other questions (John 8:32, John 11:11).

Wow! It is amazing how you regularly log on to complain about something or someone, but when you are…Read More actually extended an opportunity to do more than sit on the sidelines and tell everyone else what they should be doing, you sidestep. Mr. Griffith offered you an opportunity to actually do something for a change instead of whine and complain. Instead of asking him what he is doing, my question is what are you doing?
Joe Gonzalez May 4, 2012 at 02:16 pm
@ Black Jack Johnson AND Mark Griffith;
It IS a fair question as concerns (1) where did the money…Read More raised go; (2) if Mr. Griffith is running for Public Office and (3) I identified three specific transportation issues, namely the proposed curtailment of G train service to five stations, the stopping of the B54 bus from running on Fulton street and the closing & removal of the token booth at Nostand and Fulton Street's A train station. Please answer the above THREE questions.You stated you raised money--WHERE DID IT GO?
Mark Winston Griffith June 6, 2012 at 01:32 pm
First, Joe, no 'm not running. I didn't respond before because I was on the verge of making a public…Read More announcement to that effect.
Secondly, you misunderstood my comments about my transportation work. I was part of a campaign called MOVE NY that was trying to establish a system - like congestion pricing - in which congestion would be mitigated, air quality would be improved, and cars going into Manhattan would help pay for transportation improvements outside of Manhattan. So there is no "money" for me to account for, especially since our traffic pricing plan never got sufficient political support. The money I was talking about raising would have been for the City and its transportation system, not the organization I was working with.
Thirdly, I trust that the Brooklyn Movement Center will eventually get to tackle transportation issues and I just joined the board of an organization that is doing transportation organizing across the city. The BMC has its hands full with education right not and our office hasn't even been open for 4 months yet, so give us a moment before we can start addressing the myriad of issues that need to be addressed in this community.
So, now that I've answered your questions, when are you going address my question? The BMC is membership run, which means that the energy and ideas come from YOU. Why don't get in contact with us and make a commitment to working with us on the very transportation issues you say you care about? 718 771-7000

Forget about it being a green space--its likely being handed over to these Jewish interlopers from…Read More Williamsburgh who are invading all things BedStuy. The Jewish folks who are the first to cry they are victims of hatred are the ones who have become what they hate. They refuse to hire Blacks, Hispanics, Asians or even Whites. They will only employ non English speaking Illegal aliens who just arrived here from Mexico. The Jews wont even pay them the minimum wage. Too bad Bed Stuy's political leadership wont stand up to these Jews. The Jews attacked and abused the poor and elderly Blacks who used to wait for the B54 Bus in front of the Jewish Synogogue at Myrtle Ave between Bedford Ave and Spencer Street and the Jews got the bus stop moved from in front of their synogogue because they dont want Blacks standing in front of their house of worship.
