Photos of children should be prohibited...how will that be able to help children in the long run? As…Read More well as disciplinary action taken against a student, what does a corporation need to know with this data?

I hate to say this but we (parents) allowed the Mayor full control of our school system becasue we…Read More sit back and do nothing unless there is a threat of our school closing. I've been involved with my children's schools from day one. I know that there are many variables as to why parents don't step up, unemployment, health issues, etc I understand the plight of families in our community however it only takes one day to come to a PTA Meeting or Parent Teacher Conference to get involved. This is a good start and I hope that these forums bring about parent awareness. During the Mayoral campaign I hope more parents step up, especially us in the low income areas.

I think it's the latter. If you notice the article says that in the history if administrations, this…Read More on while it had the most new schools it also has the most closures. With that NYC has a lot of unused bldgs or rather spaces that could possibly be empty come the new yr. What are the rules when they take 1 school and make like 20 different schools in the space? Are there any of those in the 78 of this year and 656 from before?
Michael Jobs April 4, 2013 at 12:27 pm
Wow!! 78 new schools. I am wondering are these all newly built schools or are they a combination of…Read More newly built schools and schools that have been shut down and the administration are saying that they are
new to pad the numbers?

Waverly, I don't know what article you read, but this one didn't quote him as saying his milieu (by…Read More which I think you mean his ethnic group?) had a monopoly on injustice. What's the purpose of speaking in a hostile way and misquoting this man? He said that his generation was politically engaged because trouble was more visible (and that's true), but he certainly didn't say that in a competitive spirit. And for all the great things he's done in his life to defend his people, and to defend civility, justice and humane behavior in general, it seems so strange to speak like this about someone like him.
Toni Haigler March 13, 2013 at 03:39 pm
That may be sure, but all other groups came of their own accord. They were not dragged in chains.
Waverly Wonder March 13, 2013 at 01:36 am
Sorry to have to burst Harry Belafonte's bubble but most of the people who arrived on American…Read More shores have come from their own ordeals of religious and ethnic hatred. His milieu does not have a monopoly on injustice.

When are we going to stop blaming everyone else for our education problems, when it is the rotten…Read More parents that let their kids down. You can give a child a pencil and a pad in a loving, caring family and more than likely that kid will do well in life. There is plenty of money already for our kids in schools. Stop throwing money to a problem that needs to be fixed at home.

Bryant D, then please tell me why are white teachers criticized if they don't want to work in these…Read More neighborhoods or when they want to leave.A teachers job is to teach ,not deal with complex issues or needs, that calls for a psychiatrist or psychologist or better yet, parental involvement .and yes bringing up ones color is racist ,especially when the only race brought up in the comment was the white one
Bryant D March 26, 2013 at 07:17 am
Now the issue of most of them being white is this: most of the kids they teach are children of color…Read More and from first hand experience I can tell you they don't understand the cultures, neighborhoods etc of the students and most of them don't make an attempt to. The classroom management skills are often low and I've seen one to many children berated & criminalized because the white teachers didn't understand how to deal with children from another culture or just plain out didn't value the children. Furthermore, many teachers of color who are from these same neighborhoods or who identify with the cultures are not being hired because the money is being spent on the teachers from alternative certification programs who are primarily white from Ivy Leagues. They are cheaper. Brady you really should dig a little deeper and hear some more stories about what's really going on in these schools. If you are a taxpayer you should be outraged at where your money is really going. I can tell you right now its not for public education particularly in low-income communities of color but it is filling up the pockets of a select few. Follow the money trail.
By the way I said "most" a lot because there are exceptions. Some of these folks come and stay for the right reasons. I know of one white teacher who moved into her schools neighborhood to learn more. She said the other white teachers shunned her for it.
Bryant D March 26, 2013 at 07:16 am
Brady this is not about picking on white people. Bringing up race, particularly when it's relevant…Read More does not qualify as racism. This is about a few things. First of all most of these kids are not entering the profession to become lifelong educators as people who take the traditional path to teaching are. Most of them are looking for a resume builder and a public service opportunity. After 2 years most of them leave and head of to law school or ed policy jobs. 5 weeks of training does not qualify one to educate kids with complex issues and needs.

One person dead from thugs coming out of the projects is justification enough. How is this not…Read More evident. NYC projects need to be torn down and rebuilt differently in order for the to blend in with communities better and decentralize the criminals. It will be easier to control. Get rid of the projects now. They are hurting children, how would this hurt more people than it already is. C'mon people not rocket science here.

Our tax dollars are spent on behalf of many citizens and institutions that many citizens don't agree…Read More with or support. Brooklyn College is a PUBLIC learning institution for ALL people. Therefore its forums should represent the diverse voices of ALL people. There are "Jewish" learning institutions that would ban BDS. Brooklyn College is NOT a Jewish institution. It is a public one. As for telling lies on Israel or any other country or peoples, lies are an unfortunate part of history that I hope people of "moral and historically philanthropic mind" can correct. As for BDS, I don't know it's true agenda. I know that it has the right to exist just like the Tea Party that I personally abhor.

The forum that is made on taxes of people like me is 1. Defamation 2. Hidden anti - Jewish and anti…Read More - israeli incitement 3. Justification of Palestinians' lies and terror. Statement that it is a discussion and covered by 1st amendment is substantially irresponsible. It is a repetition of Bloomberg's support of the Victory mosque in downtown Manhattan, which is a slap in face of the relatives of the victims and good gesture for the Islamists who digged in in our city. I wish Bloomberg and other silly Jews who think that they defend democracy letting fascists lie on Israel and propagate against the Jews go the Eastern Europe to see the graves of six million Jews and understand holocaust not just giving boring speeches about unforgetability of the history. Supporting this particular forum means that such people like Bloomberg forgot about the holocaust. They shake hands with people who deny the fact of final solution. Not saying that 11 Arabs who represent Arab parties are in the Israeli knesset is a lie. They say about hostility to Israel which gave them education and prosperous lives. They will not say that most of Muslim minorities voted for Likud because they better understand situation than silly Bloomberg and people like him. Palestinian problem is an Arab problem. Jews gave them a lot of freedom and rights and received hostility and terror. Arabs kill Arabs and hate Jews and palestinians. No Arab country except Jordan gave them citizenship. Enough lies and hatred.

is this a joke? you know what is going to impact your children's "bodies and psyches" a…Read More lot more than emergency contraception? HAVING A BABY.
limiting access to birth control won't stop people from having sex. the reason kids are getting the EC more than other forms of contraception? because of the anti-contraception bullshit people like mister heche are trying to sell. because girls don't think they're gonna have sex for the first time next weekend. because boys are taught condoms 'don't feel good'. because kids don't want to tell their parents they're thinking about having sex. because girls don't want to be called sluts. and because we still don't have comprehensive, medically-accurate sex education in our schools, so kids can know that taking the pill doesn't make them a slut. that condoms don't affect pleasure. that they can pregnant the first time they have sex.
pregnancy is a bigger deal than emergency contraception and the sooner you take it, the sooner it works. I care far more about my kids having access to contraception than I do about your kids having to ask you for permission to use it.

So, don't have an abortion, don't use BC, and we won't help when the child we forced you to have is…Read More born. Mister Heche...what are people supposed to do? Easy for you when you aren't the one having to live with these choices to push your ideals on others. And wait...don't have sex? Why? Married people are allowed to, but maybe we aren't ready to have kids yet. And lastly, what business is it of yours? How about you worry about you, and I'll worry about me. I'm not messing with your life, quit messing with mine! I don't need you to tell me what to do. I moved out of my parents house about 20 years ago! You should try it too!

When I first saw this article yesterday, it was hours after I wrote my first complaint letter to my…Read More daughter's school which is P.S. 308. Before composing the letter, for two months I have tried to have a conversation with her teacher because the format of the homework changed and seemed needed to be handed in on a weekly basis instead of a daily one. Though I am a single mother, I am neither underserved or underprivileged but for two years my family languished, crushed by the recession. When my daughter was born (oxford health insurance) we lived in school district 20, in Kensington, which left me with no worries about my daughter ever attending an underperforming school. But things changed and now I'm back in the neighborhood I grew up in. I love this neighborhood and I love my block. I do not consider my area to be impoverished, considering it is gentrified, but often wonder why the gentrification doesn't extend to my daughter's school.
Due to the accepted perception of being a beleaguered school, it seems they don't even try and automatically assume parents are idiots. My daughter missed the first two days of school because they couldn't "find her name in the computer" and tried to convince me that I never registered her. Ultimately her name was found on another list, but none of that would have occurred if they'd ask me what pre-k my daughter attended. Instead of making inquires of me, I was dismised because they couldn't find my daughter's name!

The biggest problem to the current educational model is that teachers and administration are being…Read More held accountable for students who do not have much development coming in. This is because African-American students, specifically in Bed-Stuy, come from broken homes and may have not had childcare or any early development. Best practices should research the difference of test scores, grades & higher education levels of children who have had this kind of development vs the many who have not. - ray.sheares@gmail.com
