The Challenge Newspaper Group

<p>Founded in 1975, The Challenge Newspaper Group publishes three newspapers targeted to the African-American population of Brooklyn. Thomas H. Watkins, Jr. is the publisher.</p> <p>The Challenge Group started with the <em>Daily Challenge Newspaper</em>, a publication that has an activist bend, and the city's only black daily newspaper. The company then purchased <em>The New York Recorder</em>, which eventually became <em>The Afro Times</em>, a family-oriented general news publication. In 1993, the company launched its third publication, <em>The New American Newspaper</em>, which covers national and local entertainment news.</p>
