VIDEO: 400 Volunteers Surge Upon Bed-Stuy

NYC volunteers pack thousands of bags and boxes of toys and food for the annual St. John's Bread and Life Sponsor-A-Family program

Close to 400 volunteers from all across New York City rose early Sunday morning, braved the cold  and headed to Bedford-Stuyvesant to help pack 5,500 new, unwrapped toys and 2,000 boxes of locally grown, organic food for ’s annual Sponsor-A-Family program.

Food recipients registered their family from computer kiosks at St. John’s soup kitchen to receive a free meal – a turkey, vegetables, stuffing, soup, fruit, bread and dessert. Also from the kiosks, they were able to enter the ages of their children and choose from a list of gifts for each child.

The effort will provide thousands of needy families at domestic violence shelters, group homes and homeless shelters with a full meal and a bag of toys. Packages will be distributed December 17-18.
