Congestion Pricing Plan Returns? Report Says Maybe

Plan to toll East River bridges could make a comeback.

Congestion pricing, the plan that all outer borough residents hate but that just won't die, is coming back again, according to The New York Times.

The new proposal isn't called congestion pricing, but as proposed, the Times reported, it sure looks a lot like it.

Congestion pricing is a system of tolls for drivers commuting into Manhattan — in particular via the East River bridges, which are currently free to drive. Proposals centered around reducing traffic in Manhattan tend to be popular with Manhattanites, but they anger those who live in the outer boroughs and drive into the city.

The new plan, according to the Times, would raise the price of commuting into Manhattan from areas that were rich with public transportation options, but keep prices low from areas where driving was likely the only option.

Just what the price would be, and how they would be determined, is as-yet undecided.

Would you be ok spending money to drive over the East River? Or is this just another tax that hits low-income workers in the wallet?
