Bed-Stuy Healthy Families on the Move

Free exercise at Restoration Plaza

On August 8th, the Brooklyn Alliance for Safer Streets (BASS) hosted the second installment of the newly launched Healthy Families on the Move (HFM), a weekly schedule of planned walks, runs and bike rides throughout Central Brooklyn. Healthy Families on the Move provides Brooklynites with a safe, fun, and convenient outlet to get to know your neighbors while walking, running and bike riding your way to a healthier body- all at no cost.

If you don’t have money to join the gym and don’t want to exercise alone, Healthy Families on the Move is the perfect answer! Not only does the group provide motivation to get in shape, but participants receive great giveaways such as discount coupons for a healthy meal at Applebee’s, fruit and water donated by Foodtown, and free pedometers to keep track of your daily progress.

As the rain dissipated last week, some 30 residents joined us including Henry Butler, Chairman of Community Board 3 of Bedford Stuyvesant, and Robert Cornegy, Jr., State Committeeman/District Leader of the 56th Assembly District . YMCA led the warm up exercises which took place at 6:00pm and the group departed promptly at 7:00pm.

Healthy Families on the Move will be held every Wednesday (weather permitting) until October 3rd leading up to Restoration’s Annual 10K Run and Fun Walk, Kiddie Run and newly installed Bike Ride on October 7th. All HFM activities are led by a guide and follow an established itinerary and route. HFM starts at 6:00 PM at Restoration Plaza (West Plaza at Marcy/Fulton in front of Applebee’s). All ages and fitness levels are accommodated but children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should wear sneakers and comfortable clothing as well as bring their own bicycle and helmet if planning to ride.
