VIDEO: NY Gauchos Take Home Championship Title at 2nd Annual "I Got You" Games

Middle School summer basketball league is a win-win for coaches and players

Saturday was the Final Four playoffs for in the second, annual Nike “” five-borough middle school Basketball League, which kicked off on Saturday, May 19.

The championship games started at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 5:00 p.m. at the home of the PSAL Champions the Kangaroos, of Boys and Girls High School.

Bed-Stuy Patch caught part of the games at BGHS, as the Long Island Lightening played the Bronx-based New York Gauchos.

“This league came about two years ago when I was thinking about a middle school basketball league that would be competitive, bring a lot of attention to the community and also allow us to show how we do things at Boys and Girls High School,” said BGHS Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach Elmer Anderson, who also founded “I Got You.”

“These coaches are great and these young players are the stars of tomorrow. It’s a win-win for these kids because they know, when you’re playing in ‘I Got You,’ we truly got you.”

The Gauchos defeated the Lightening, 63-51 and then went on to take the championship title against New Heights, 80-71. Mark Martin was awarded the championship team’s MVP, with 21 points. Marques Drakesford of New Heights took home the sportsmanship award, scoring 20 points.

So sorry we had to miss the championship game this was do to a training seminar up at SUNY New Paultz, for assistant coach state certification. Thank you Commmissioner Elmer Anderson, for running an awesome, professional league. These type of events give our youngsters an opportunity to display their growth as scholar athletes in the NYC area. God bless you, and please continue to provide these type of programs for the youth of this great city.
