BGHS Football Makes Playoffs, Is Defeated Second Round

Despite Second-Round Loss to Tottenville, Coach Says Season Was a Success

After posting a 5-4 record and earning the eight seed in the PSAL playoffs early November, varsity football team defeated ninth-seeded Susan Wagner in the first round, 44-22, at home.

Unfortunately, the Kangaroos' season came to an abrupt end later the same month, as Tottenville beat them handily, 33-6, in the second round.

Though head coach Barry O'Connor said Boys and Girls had a successful campaign, he wasn't quite ready to pack it in, but understands the reality of sports.

"It was a good run, but you never want it to end," O'Connor said. "Look, when it's all said and done, only one team is going to be happy."

The Kangaroos will lose 18 seniors, most notably running back Wilbert Lee, who rushed for 968 yards and 15 touchdown. The honor roll student will be graduating in January, and has verbally committed to Division I University of Connecticut.

But junior Khadeem Campbell should fill in nicely in the backfield for the departed Lee next season, while junior Christian Hardin (63 tackles) and sophomore John Courcelle (59 tackels) will be returning to anchor Boys and Girls' defense.

"I'm losing some seniors, but I got some kids coming back. I think we'll have a couple more battles over the next couple of years," the eight-year coach said of future match ups between Boys and Girls and Tottenville, who beat them twice in 2010.

While O'Connor was happy the way his boys preformed all season long, his heart does goes out to his upperclassmen, knowing that they played their last high school football game.

However, he believes they will take solace in their football achievements when they reminisce of their high school gridiron days.

"The only thing I feel said about is the coaches keep coming back, but those kids over here only have so much time," O'Connor said. "My seniors, they're disappointed now, but I think in a little while they'll look back and will be proud of things they accomplished this season."
