Bed-Stuy Teacher Scores a 99% in DOE Report

P.S. 5 teacher Janice Porter is the "cream of the crop," says the New York Post, tying one other city teacher for best student scores.

Janice Porter, a fourth grade teacher at P.S. 5, was one of just 32 of the fourth- through eighth-grade city teachers who scored a 99 percent multi-year ranking in the Department of Education’s 2009-2010 report, says the New York Post.

With a zero margin of error, Porter and few other city teachers were also in the 99th percentile for the single year 2009-2010, says the Post. But it was only Porter and Maggie Catacora, a fourth grade teacher from Harlem, who scored the highest in math and reading across the city.

Porter, 55, told the Post that in ten years she hasn’t had a single student fail, adding that, “Some of my students have perfect scores across the board on their exams, and I am so proud of them.”

“There have been so many stories about bad teachers and all their scandals with those poor kids,” Porter told the paper. “It’s just wrong what they’ve done. People like that bring us all down and lower our standing."
