VIDEO: New Beginnings Charter School Holds Second Annual Science Fair

Kindergarteners through fourth-graders become budding scientists!

Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School (BSNBCS) held its second annual science fair Thursday morning.

Cellular osmosis, volcanic eruptions, cloud formations, solar energy and more were on display in BSNBCS's gymnasium, as the school's kindergarteners through fourth-graders showcased their budding interest in the mechanics of life!

Typically, elementary school children take part in their first science fair around the seventh and eighth grade. However, Karen Jones, principal at New Beginnings, said engaging children early in science is the most effective way to stimulate their interest in the world around them.

She added, science is particularly important for students of color whose exposure to the various life sciences historically has lacked during their early academic years.

"Children of color typically are not engaged in science and technology the way they should be," said Jones. "I want to excite our children and get them interested in exploration, in investigation, in consumer reporting. This is probably one of the most exciting things that we do during the course of the year."

BSNBCS opened its doors in September 2010 to serve families in Community School District 16, starting with kindergarten through third grade. The school will add a grade each year until 8th grade. Each BSNBCS student dedicates at least 25 hours towards community service.
