BGHS: A Community Appeal for Support

From Bernard Gassaway, principal of Boys & Girls High School

Dear Clergy, Community, and Business Leaders,

As we approach the end of this school year, we are appealing to churches and leaders of this community in support of a fundraising drive on behalf of the students at Boys and Girls H.S. First, we would like to pay the application fee for all seniors interested in applying to colleges in the City University of New York.

We received a limited number of fee waivers for approximately 100 students that have already applied however, many more want to apply. The cost of the application is $65.00 which will allow these students to apply to 6 colleges.

Unfortunately many of our students cannot afford the application fee at this time. This should not be a deterrent for any of our students that want to go to college. Many of our students have overcome tremendous odds and are expected to graduate this June. There is a real possibility that they will be able to go to college for the Fall semester if they are able to apply.

Secondly, our school has also been asked to participate in the Historic 50th year Anniversary of the Freedom Riders to take place in Jackson, Mississippi, on May 20–28, 2011. We will be joined by youth delegations from other New York City schools.

The original Freedom Riders that altered the course of history during the Civil Rights Movement will be present at this event. There will be workshops and educational activities throughout this week of celebration. This historic week will culminate with a celebration where President Barack Obama is expected to attend. This is an event that our students will remember for the rest of their lives.

Our objective is to raise $10,000 by June 28, 2011 to realize these two goals. You may want to sponsor a student for $65.00 or make a contribution to the Freedom Riders Celebration. All contributions are welcome no matter how small. Please share this information with your congregations, constituents, and stakeholders.

We know that our community supports Boys and Girls H.S. and we thank you for your support. Make all contributions payable to Boys and Girls High School.

Sincerely,

Bernard Gassaway
