College of Technology Opens Bed-Stuy Facility

TCI celebrated its ribbon-cutting at Restoration Plaza on Monday

Monday afternoon, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the plaza to welcome the grand opening of The Technical Career Institute (TCI), located at 1360 Fulton Street, on the 3rd floor.

TCI joins the College of New Rochelle as the second institute of higher learning to take up residence on BSRC’s facility.

TCI’s main campus is located at 320 W. 31st Street in midtown Manhattan. The school was founded 102 years ago, in 1910 by Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, with a current enrollment of 4,200 students.

The Brooklyn location will serve solely as a teaching site, with seven classrooms that accommodate between 18 and 26 students, offering classes for first-semester students only after which they will continue on to the midtown location.

“What we’re trying to do right now is bring the college curriculum closer to where our students come from,” said William Talbot, TCI’s president. “The majority of our students either come from north of our location or from all throughout Brooklyn. So by opening this facility, it makes it more convenient for students to attend their classes.”

TCI boasts dual accreditation by the New York State Board of Regents, as well as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, with several program specific accreditations in such areas as electronics engineering, ophthalmic dispensing and facilities management.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to have another education facility that focuses on skills development, and we’re looking to integrate it with a lot of the programming that we undertake,” said Colvin Grannum, executive director and CEO of Restoration Corporation.

“Our primary goal at Restoration is to create as much opportunity as possible for people to improve themselves, increase their earning power, and just become more well rounded. So this fits nicely with our menu of services, and I think there’s some nice synergies.”

Talbot added, “Restoration is an amazing facility, and we feel this is a nice match.”
