Charter School Wants to Move into PS 59
The DOE wants Success Academy Bed-Stuy 2 to share a location with PS 59.
The Department of Education wants a new charter school, Success Academy Bed-Stuy 2, to share space with PS 59, according to a report in the Brooklyn Eagle.
The new charter school will serve grades K-4, and if moved into PS 59, would share the auditorium, gymnasium and cafeteria.
According to the article, the DOE has reported that enrollment at PS 59 had declined steadily over the last few years, and while it is a zoned elementary school, it serves many students from outside its zone – approximately 40%.

According to the DOE’s proposal (PDF), PS 59 has the capacity to serve 825 students, but this year only has 434 students enrolled. With both students from PS 59 and Success Academy, the building is projected to house 746-826 students in the 2017-2018 school year.
A public hearing on the co-location is scheduled for December 6 at 6 p.m. at 211 Throop Avenue.
