Bedford Stuyvesant, Who Are Your Neighbors?

Join me in taking a look at Bedford Stuyvesant and its developing culture. As your neighbor I will discuss the culture, which will include demographic make up, education and income.

Over the years, Bedford-Stuyvesant has developed a pretty tough reputation, from being immortalized as the birthplace of Biggie Smalls and Jay-Z, to being renamed "Crooklyn." Also, prior to that, it carried the unshakeable moniker of "Do-or-Die Bed-Stuy."

But what is the true picture of Bed-Stuy? Who lives here, who works here and who gets an education here? Also, if Brooklyn is the borough of churches, then who worships in Bed-Stuy?

It is a common joke that a Bed-Stuy resident can't throw a rock without hitting a Pastor, Reverend, Minister, Imam and now even Rabbi in the head -- Not that we advocate hitting clergy in the head. Seriously, no hitting clergy in the head!

Let's take a close look at the demographics of Bed-Stuy. For the purpose of this introductory blog, let's look at two very important measurements, first education and income. And then later, I promise, we will get to Bed-Stuy's long-standing love affair with religion.

Percentage of the population with an undergraduate degree or higher and household income by community district:
