Teachers Unions Split on Endorsements for Congress
Barron wins support, while the United Federation of Teachers has decided not to endorse any candidate.
The two unions that represent that majority of the city’s school system employees are split on their endorsements in the race for retiring Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns’ seat in Congress, says Gotham Schools.
DC-37, which represents 25,000 Department of Education employees, endorsed Councilman Charles Barron, D-East New York, in what Gotham Schools calls “a not-so-subtle rejection of his opponent’s supportive position on charter schools.”
According to the article, the United Federation of Teachers, which represents 75,000 teachers – and 200,000 members in total – recently announced that it wouldn’t endorse any candidate.

Gotham Schools says that neither union mentioned Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries – who, along with , is running opposed to Barron – in their statements.
