South Brooklyn Pol Calls 'Negrohood' Mailer a 'Typo'

Assembly candidate Ben Akselrod apologized for the word on Wednesday, while his treasurer resigned.

Assembly candidate Ben Akselrod, D-Sheepshead Bay, apologized on Wednesday for campaign sent mailers that used the word “negrohood,” calling it a “typo,” says the New York Daily News.

“As the candidate, I take full responsibility for this inadvertent error and I am sorry to anyone who was offended by it,” Akselrod, who’s running in the Sept. 13 Democratic primary against Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, said in a statement.

The mailers, which were sent out last week by the Friends of Ben Akselrod, claimed that opponent Cymbrowitz “has allowed crime to go up over 50% in our negrohood so far this year.”

Akselrod has since blasted his opponent’s supporters for focusing too much on the typo, instead of addressing larger crime in the community.

Akselrod campaign treasurer Bryan Goldstein told the blog Sheepshead Bites that he was “not involved” in the creation of the flier, despite his name being the return address. Goldstein resigned Monday anyway.
