Markowitz Appoints New Deputy Borough President

Brooklyn's next Deputy Borough President will be Sandra Chapman, Borough President Marty Markowitz announced Monday.

Chapman, director of the Community Service Center at Borough Hall, replaces Yvonne Graham, who leaves her post for a job in the Cuomo administration effective Nov. 30.

As No. 2 at Borough Hall, Chapman will work alongside Markowitz in managing the affairs of the BP's office.

Like Graham, who is from Jamaica, Chapman boasts roots in Brooklyn's immigrant community.

"That someone with my background, a Guyanese-American immigrant with nearly three decades in the public sector, would be appointed Deputy Borough President is testament to Marty’s commitment to Brooklynites and enhancing Brooklyn’s international reputation as ‘proud home to everyone from everywhere,'" Chapman said.

A resident of Canarsie, Chapman joined the Borough President's office in 1996.

Earlier in the year, Graham was the subject of speculation over a possible bid for Borough President—an office Markowitz is set to vacate due to term limits in 2013.

Graham's exit clears the way for chief of staff Carlo Scissura, who is still mulling a run for his boss' seat, according to City Hall News.

Scissura was recently picked to lead the borough's , an ambitious initiative to transform one of Brooklyn's busiest thoroughfares.
