How Should Hakeem Jeffries Vote on a Syria Strike?

President Barack Obama this weekend said he will let the U.S. congress decide on whether to attack Syria after an alleged chemical weapons attack by Syrian President Bashar Assad that killed hundreds of children and violated international rules of war.

As Americans are "weary of war," the president said in his Saturday address to the public that putting the decision in the hands of the people's representatives was more in line with the country's democratic ideals.

"I know that the country will be stronger if we take this course, and our actions will be even more effective," he said.

U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries issued a statement on Syria Wednesday, saying he respected the president's decision to ask Congress for approval. 

"President Obama did the right thing by seeking congressional authorization, and we must now carefully evaluate whether the use of force is appropriate. The situation in Syria is a serious one and the use of chemical weapons, if proven, must be met with severe consequences," Jeffries said. "Over the next few days, I will seek to determine whether the resolution placed before the Congress is narrowly tailored to protect compelling national security interests, and upon that basis cast my vote."
