Challenger Emerges for Mealy’s Council Seat

Education activist criticizes incumbent's attendance record.

Education activist Kathleen Daniel announced last Sunday that she will be challenging City Councilwoman Darlene Mealy for Brooklyn’s 41st City Council District seat, according to Observer.com’s political blog, Politicker.

Daniel’s campaign highlighted Mealy’s lack of campaign contributions – the incumbent has raised $5,182 as of June 11 – as well as the fact that the Councilwoman has missed about one quarter of scheduled Council meetings.

“I’m a first generation American born in a family of immigrants. People left everything they had had to come here so I could have a better life,” Daniel said. “If I didn’t show up to work 25 percent of the time, not only would my family would disown me, I’d be fired.”
