On September 11, 2001, Engine 235, Battalion 57, a firehouse on Nostrand Avenue and Monroe Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, suffered the loss of six firemen during the rescue efforts at The World Trade Center.

Early Sunday morning on September 11, 2011, at the ten-year anniversary of this tragedy, those six heroes—fondly referred to as "The Monroe Six"—were honored by their fellow firemen and their surviving families.

Loved ones gathered inside and outside of the fire station to meet and to commiserate—many who have not seen each other in several years. The group observed a moment of silence and prayer around the time the first plane hit the first tower, and then another moment of silence at the time of the second collision.
