UPDATE: Police Investigating Death of 5-Year-Old Girl on Hull Street

Child had a long medical history, according to guardians

UPDATE Saturday, March 31, 7:45pm:

The following is an update to the story, as told to Bed-Stuy Patch by the child's guardians:

The child's paternal guardian was bathing the child in the tub, which the guardians had equipped with guard rails. He turned away from the tub for a moment to keep the dog from entering the bathroom, and when he turned back around, the child had started to slip under the water.

He immediately lifted her out of the water, performed CPR and called 911. Emergency personnel arrived ten minutes later and connected the child to a respirator to assist in her breathing. But the girl died on the way to the hospital.

The deceased child -- who on Saturday, March 31, would have celebrated her 6th birthday -- was born with a birth defect that required ongoing care and supervision. Her guardians assumed parental responsibility of her when she was 3 years old, after the child's birth mother abandoned her.

Medical personnel informed the couple that the child likely suffered a seizure and it overwhelmed her body, due to her existing medical condition. However the guardians are awaiting to hear the final cause of death by the Medical Examiner.
