Police Blotter: Three Shootings and a Robbery Pattern

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 81st Precinct

Crime in the 81st Precinct is reported up 50 percent for the week of April 25 to May 1 (28 crimes versus 18 crimes), compared to this same time last year. For the month, crime also is up 15.7 percent (103 incidents versus 89), compared to this same 28-day period last year. For the year, crime is up 4.8 percent compared to this same time last year

A few incidents:

On Monday, May 9, at approximately 5:00 pm, in an incident that involved both the 79th and 81st Precincts, three shots fired on the corner of Willoughby Avenue and Marcus Garvey Boulevard. Police were called to the scene following a call of a group of teenagers fighting. Reportedly, the melee had escalated, at which point, one of the teens pulled out a gun and started shooting. Police were able to catch and arrest a few of the individuals. The investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday, May 5, at approximately 8:30 pm, there was a shooting on the corner of Chauncey Street and Saratoga Avenue. A black male, 30 years old, approached a group of men to complain about them talking to his young daughter, claimed the man. An argument ensued, until one of the guys he approached pulled out a gun and shot him once in the arm and once in the torso. Police, who were parked nearby, were able to capture both of the perpetrators and recover the gun. The men were arrested, and the victim was transported to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

On Wednesday, May 11, at approximately 12:30 am, police responded to a 911 call of a man shot at 234 Ralph Avenue, in the courtyard of Brevoort Houses. Upon arrival, responding officers found a black male, 23 years old, identified as Rashad Baucom, with gunshot wounds to the head and lower back. Ambulances arrived and pronounced the victim dead on arrival. There were no witnesses, and there are no arrest(s) at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

Pattern Alert:

  • Police in the 81st Precinct are alerting residents to a developing pattern of robberies that have occurred recently on Patchen Avenue between Monroe Avenue and Halsey Street. Police say be careful and alert of cell phone snatches, purse snatches and strong-arm robberies.
  • Police also warn of burglaries in the southern area of Stuyvesant Heights.
