Police Blotter: Police Report 23 Cell Phone Snatches in Past Month

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 79th Precinct

The 79 Precinct experienced a 43 percent increase in crime for the week of September 19 - 25 (53 incidents vs 37 incidents), compared to this same week last year. For the past month the precinct experienced a 29 percent increase in crime (176 incidents vs 137 incidents), compared to this same 28-day period last year.  

Shooting:  

On Tuesday, Sept 20, at approximately 10:50pm, a 27-year-old man was shot in his right leg while walking in front of 901 Dekalb Ave. The male victim was transported to Woodhull Hospital by an unknown person. The male victim stated to investigators that he heard a shot and felt pain. The investigation is ongoing.

3 Robberies:  

On Monday, September 19, at approximately 11:55pm, a livery cab driver was robbed of money and an iPhone by three perpetrators in front of 178 Ellery Street, while waiting for a fare. The suspects are described as 3 black males, one of whom displayed a firearm. The driver sustained a laceration to his head after being struck in the head with the gun. The victim was transported to Woodhull hospital

On Tuesday, Sept 20, at approximately 3:30am, a man was robbed by force of his wallet and iPhone in front of 1047 Bedford Avenue. The investigation is ongoing. 

On Thursday, September 22, at approximately 12:45am, a man was robbed of $700 and his iPhone on Myrtle Avenue near Spencer Street. According to the victim, he was just leaving the Myrtle Avenue train stop and was walking eastbound, when 2 black males displayed a knife, threatened him and then robbed him of his property.

Message from 79th Precinct: Robberies of cell phones continue to plague the residents of the 79th Precinct. Please be cognizant of your surroundings and avoid texting and walking if possible. In the past month there have been 23 robberies of cell phones- the majority of which were I-Phones.
