Police Blotter: Two Shootings

A weekly roundup of police activity in the 81st Precinct

The 81st Police Precinct is reporting a 7.7 percent drop in crime for the week of July 11 - July 17 (24 incidents versus 26 incidents), compared to this same week last year. The precinct reports a 6 percent decrease in crime for the month (106 incidents versus 119 incidents), compared to this same 28-day period last year. And year-to-date, the precinct is reporting a 10.1 percent increase in crime (720 incidents versus 654 incidents), compared to this same time period in 2010.

Two Shootings:

On Thursday, July 21 at approximately 11:30pm, a 20-year-old male was walking down Myrtle Avenue, toward Broadway Avenue when he is confronted by another male with whom he had a prior disagreement. The second male pulled out a gun and started shooting, hitting the victim in the left leg. Nearby plainclothes officers heard the gun shots and were able to immediately call for aid for the victim who was transported to Kings County Hospital and was later release in good condition. They also apprehended the shooter and recovered his firearm. The shooter is in police custody.

On Saturday, July 23, at approximately 1:00pm, a 911 call came into the 81st Precinct regarding a 46-year-old male who was left dead with gunshot wounds to the head. Reportedly, the man was chased into a Bodega at 225 Chauncey Avenue by two other males with whom the victim had a prior disagreement. The suspects pulled out a gun at the scene, and shot the man point-blank in the head. Police believe the incident was family related. Police say they have a lead on one of the suspects. The investigation continues.

81st Pct. Police also are reporting a spike in the the number of reported identity thefts in the area. Police are cautioning residents to pay careful attention to their personal belongings and any personal identification that may provide background information, including pin numbers to debit and ATM cards.
