According to police, during the call, the man grabbed the phone from the woman's hands and broke it, interrupting her call to the police. Police traced the location. Upon arrival, the man fled the apartment and ran up to an empty apartment on the third floor, barricading himself inside.

Police forced entry into the apartment, but the man escaped from a window and down a fire escape. Police have full identification of the man who is 34 years old and has a criminal record. The investigation is ongoing.

Patterns:

Police are saying that burglaries and grand larcenies (cell phone and purse robberies) are up in the 81st Pct. They are asking residents to please report  strange activity in and around their neighbors' homes, if you suspect it is an attempted burlgary. Also, always report thefts of personal items -- even small thefts -- so the precinct can begin identifying and targeting problem areas of criminal activity.
