Police Blotter: Man Holds Up a Fulton St. Deli, Steals a Pack of Newports

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 79th Precinct

Crime reportedly is down 8 percent for the week of March 19 through March 25 (33 incidents versus 36 incidents), compared to this same week in 2011. For the month, crime is up 3 percent (121 incidents versus 117 incidents), compared to this 28-day period in 2011. Year to date, crime is up 25 percent (390 incidents versus 311 incidents), compared to this same time period last year.

Three Robberies:

On Sunday, March 25, at approximately 10:00pm, there was an armed robbery at Seven and One Deli on 1521 Fulton Street. According to police reports, a man described walked into the deli, pointed a black handgun at the store’s employee and demanded money. The perpetrator then took $700 in cash and a pack of Newport cigarettes. The man was caught on video and is described as a light-complexion black male wearing a white scarf and a blue baseball hat with a Mets logo. There have been no arrests. Police are studying the tapes and the investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday, March 29, at approximately 11:30pm, police received a call of a robbery on Greene Avenue. According to police reports, an 18-year-old woman was opening the outdoor mail box outside of her residence when an unknown man approached her from behind and said, “Miss, give me your bag,” while pointing a silver gun at the victim’s chest. The victim handed over her bag, which contained an older model of an iPod Shuffle, a check for “cash,” her wallet, which contained a debit VISA card. The perpetrator fled on foot with the bag toward Bedford Avenue. There were no injuries, and the investigation is ongoing.

On Friday, March 30, at approximately 3:30pm a man, 28, was robbed in his stairway. According to police reports, the man was sitting in the 6th floor stairway of his building, located at 1055 Myrtle Avenue, where he was visiting a friend when two unknown males approached him from the 7th floor and displayed a black firearm. The only description for the men given was that both were wearing black masks. The perpetrators then demanded of the victim, “Give me everything you got.” The perpetrators then forcibly removed from the a Samsung Exhibit II 4G, and the victim’s wallet, which contained debit cards, cash, a social security card and a shelter I.D. card
