Police Blotter: Major Drug Arrest on Greene Avenue

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 81st Precinct

Crime is down 44 percent this week in the 81st precinct (19 incidents versus 34), for the week of January 2 – January 8, compared to this same week in 2011. For the last 28 days, crime is down 19 percent (96 incidents versus 119), compared to this same 28-day period last year. And year to date, crime is down 47 percent (20 incidents versus 38), compared to this same time period in 2011.

Drug Arrest

On Wednesday, January 18, at approximately 7:00am, the 81st Precinct conducted a major drug takedown. According to the police report, the NYPD issued a warrant for a possible drug-dealing location on Greene Avenue. Cops busted into the residence on Greene Avenue, where they were able to successfully retrieve 112 zips (bags) of crack cocaine, 7 glasine envelopes of heroin, 18 zip lock bags of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia. Cops also made one arrest, a male, 50 years, who had 36 prior arrests. The perpetrator currently in jail.

Two Shootings

On Monday, January 16, approximately 9:30pm, a 33-year-old man was shot on Jefferson Avenue. According to the police report, the victim says he was leaving the inside of 99 Jefferson Avenue when he felt a sudden pain in his lower back and realized he had been shot. The man flagged a taxi and admitted himself to Wykoff Hospital. The victim could provide no description of an assailant, and provided no further details. Police have not yet recovered any shell casings or evidence of the crime at the scene, but the investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday, January 11, at approximately 9:00pm, a man, 24, was shot in on Herkimer Street. According to the report, the man said he was sitting on the steps with a friend outside of a residence on Herkimer when three men, described only as three black males, walked up to him. One pointed a gun, shot 1-2 times and then ran down Buffalo Avenue. The victim said the three men were unknown to him, and he could not provide further descriptions of the perpetrators. A police search did recover bullet casings, but the investigation continues.
