Police Blotter: Five Reported Shootings in One Day

A weekly roundup of police activity in the 79th Precinct.

Crime is up 20 percent in the 79th Precinct for the week of May 9 through May 15, 2011 (49 incidents vs. 41), compared to this same time period last year. Crime is down 5 percent for the month (148 vs. 156), compared to this same 28-day period last year. For the year so far, crime is down 12 percent (560 incidents vs. 638), compared to this same time in 2010.

Last week, Thursday, May 19, there were five reported shooting incidents in one day. Deputy Inspector, Peter Bartoszek commented, “One of the worst days of my career was last Thursday.”

On Thursday, May 19, at approximately 1:30 am, 79th precinct police responded to calls of a man shot on Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street. Police are still trying to gather details surrounding the incident, as the victim is not fully cooperating with police.

On Thursday, May 19, at approximately 4:37 pm, a 15-year-old girl was shot at Throop and Lexington Avenues. Cameras on the scene showed an unknown perpetrator walked up to the girl and shot her in the right leg unprovoked. The investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday, May 19, at approximately 6:20 pm, 79th precinct police responded to reports of a male shot at 983 Gates Ave. No further information is available about the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday, May 19, at approximately 9:15 pm, 79th precinct police responded to a report of multiple shootings that took place at Nostrand Avenue and Monroe Street. The perpetrators had fled by the timepolice arrived. But one woman, an elderly lady, was caught in the crossfire. She survived. Investigation continues.

On Thursday, May 19, at approximately 11:30 pm, police responded to reports of a shooting in front of 425 Gates Avenue near Nostrand Avenue. Police and emergency vehicles arrived at the scene to find one male victim, identified as Kwasiada Crevelle, 24, who had been shot in the left side of his chest. He was transported to Woodhull Hospital, but died en route from cardiac arrest. The perpetrator fled on foot. Police called in for aviation support. The perpetrator barricaded himself inside of property near the scene. After a long standoff, police eventually were able to talk him out of the property. The shooter, later identified as Marell Walker, 24, was arrested and charged the next day with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Missing Person

On Thursday, May 19, at approximately 1:42 am, police received reports of a missing 14-year-old. The girl was last seen wearing a blue school uniform. The investigation is ongoing.

Hit and Run

On Wednesday, May 25, at approximately 9:32 pm, police received reports of a hit-and-run incident at Marcy and Lexington Avenues. Units were called to the scene to canvass the area for a white PT Cruiser occupied by two black males. The perpetrators abandoned the vehicle at 206 Lexington Avenue and reportedly fled southbound on foot down Bedford Avenue.
