81st Pct. Police Blotter: 2011 Year-End Statistical Roundup

Overall, crime is up 2 percent in the 81st Precinct of Bedford-Stuyvesant for 2011

Crime reportedly is down 17 percent in the 81st precinct for the week of December 19 – December 25, 2011, (25 incidents versus 30 incidents), compared to the same week last year.  For the month, crime is down 3 percent (119 incidents versus 123), compared to this same 28-day period in 2010.  Year to date, crime is up 2 percent (1,432 incidents versus 1,400 incidents), compared to last year during this same time period.

2011 statistics, versus 2010 statistics for the 81st Precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Marcus Garvey Blvd to Broadway Avenue east to west; Flushing Avenue to Atlantic Avenue, north to south):

Murders:  12 murders (in 2011) vs. 17 murders (in 2010), a 29% decrease

Rapes: 16 rapes vs. 24 rapes, a 33% decrease

Robberies: 332 robberies vs. 348 robberies, a 5% decrease

Felony Assaults: 280 assaults vs. 319 assaults, a 12% decrease

Burglaries: 294 burglaries vs. 246 burglaries, a 20% increase

Grand Larcenies: 416 vs. 363, a 15% increase

Grand Auto Larcenies: 82 vs. 83, a 1% decrease

TOTAL INCIDENTS: 1,432 incidents in 2011 vs. 1,400 incidents in 2010, a 2.3% overall increase

According to 81st Pct police officials, most recently, there has been a continued rash of burglaries. Officials say to be diligent in safeguarding your homes by securing all doors and windows at all times. There also has been a slight increase in the report of grand larcenies.

Most recently, 81st Pct officials are reporting some break-ins around Jefferson and Hancock between Saratoga and Ralph and some in northern Bed-Stuy. “But it’s been sporadic in nature," said the police official.
