Police Blotter: Boy Attacked in Marcy Houses, Robbed of His Pants

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 79th Pct.

Crime is down 13 percent in the 79th Precinct (40 incidents versus 46 incidents) for the week of April 23 – April 29, compared to last year at this same time. For the month, crime is up 21 percent (167 incidents versus 138 incidents) for this same 28-day period in 2011. Year to date, crime is up 20 percent (581 incidents versus 484 incidents), compared to this same time period last year.

Four Robberies:

On Thursday, April 12, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a food delivery truck driver was robbed on Marcus Garvey Boulevard. According to police, the driver was making a bread delivery to a supermarket at 476 Marcus Garvey Boulevard. He left the rear compartment door of the truck half-open to carry items inside of the store, and when he returned to the truck, two unknown men were waiting inside. They grabbed the victim, displayed what appeared to be a gun and demanded money. The victim handed over $1,000 in cash. The perpetrators then fled on foot inside of 1509 Fulton Street. The investigation is ongoing.

A 49-year-old man identified as Derrick Everett was caught and arrested after stealing a cell phone out of a Parks Department van parked at 1090 Fulton Street, between Classon and Franklin Avenue. According to police, on Monday, April 30, at approximately 1:00 p.m. a retired NYPD officer saw the perpetrator enter the front passenger door of the van without permission, remove a cell phone and then pass it off to another unidentified perpetrator. The retired officer then flagged down a patrol car and identified the thief, who was arrested. The other perpetrator has not been apprehended. The investigation is ongoing.

On Monday, April 30, at approximately 7:35 p.m. a grocery store/bodega was robbed on Franklin Avenue. According to police, a man wearing a Jamaican flag bandana covering the area below his eyes walked into a bodega at 316 Franklin Avenue, at the corner of Clifton Place. The perpetrator then pointed a handgun at the merchant and said, “Give me the money and be quiet.” The merchant then gave the thief $500 - $600 in cash. The perpetrator then fled southbound down Franklin on foot, and then eastbound on Greene Avenue. Police canvassed the area without result. The investigation is ongoing.

On Tuesday, May 1, at approximately 1:20 a.m., 17-year old boy was robbed while walking through Marcy Houses. According to police, the victim was walking through Marcy Projects when a group of unknown males attacked him, robbed him of a gold watch, a bracelet, a cell phone, a gold chain and his pants. The victim suffered a laceration to the right side of his head from an unknown blunt instrument. The perpetrators then fled the scene in a black Ford Explorer (model: approximately 2008). Police canvassed the area without result. The investigation is ongoing.
