Police Blotter: A Robbery, an Auto Theft and Graffiti Arrests

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 79th Precinct

Last week, April 4 - April 10, the 79th Precinct experienced a 20 percent crime reduction (32 vs 40 crimes), compared to last year at this same time. For the past month (28-day period), there has been a 9 percent crime increase in the 79th Pct (138 vs 126), compared to last year at this same time.

A Shooting

On Saturday, April 9, at 11:30 pm, a male, 22, was shot multiple times in the 13th floor hallway of 77 Tompkins Ave (Tompkins Housing Development). The male victim is in stable condition and the motive for this shooting is still under investigation by the 79th Pct Detective Squad.   

Graffiti Arrests

The 79th Precinct Conditions Team made two significant arrests for Graffiti. On Saturday April 9, at approximately 5:00 am, officers from the 79th Precinct observed a male spray painting on a wall on the corner of Nostrand and Willoughby Avenues. The male, 31, and his female accomplice were placed under arrest without incident. Six cans of spray paint were recovered. The male's tag was "$HA Money." After the arrest, an investigation by the 79th Precinct revealed that this tag was written at 15 other locations throughout the 79th Precinct boundaries. The male perpetrator, who lives in Bedford -Stuyvesant, was charged with 16 counts of Making Graffiti.  

Robbery  

On Tuesday, April 5, at 4:30 pm, a 15-year-old male was attacked by four unknown males. During this attack, the victim's backpack was taken, which possessed an iPod and headsets. This robbery is under investigation by the 79th Precinct.  

Commercial Burglary  

On Wednesday, April 6, an unknown person entered a sidewalk basement window at 100 Marcus Garvey Blvd. Approximately $500 was removed from the premises.  

Auto Theft  

On Thursday, April 7, at 9:00 pm, a female complainant reported that her 2005 Mistubishi was stolen while she was in a bodega located at 1053 Bedford Avenue. This complainant left her car running while she entered the store. When she returned an unknown person had entered the auto and fled in an unknown direction.  

The 79th Precinct Crime Prevention Unit stresses that cars should not be left running and unattended. In addition, ensure cars are locked and all valuables are not visible within the auto.
