Police Blotter: A Carjacking on Bedford Avenue

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 79th Precinct

The 79th Police Precinct experienced a 51 percent increase in overall crime (47 incidents vs. 31 incidents), for the week of September 5 - September 11, 2011, compared to this same time last year. For the month, the precinct experienced a 14 percent increase in overall crime (158 incidents vs. 138 incidents), compared to this same 28-day period in 2010.  

Robbery:  

On Monday, September 5, at approximately 4:40am, a 24-year-old man was robbed by force of his iPhone while walking in front of 921 Myrtle Avenue (The Tompkins Houses). The victim was talking on his phone when another man, described as a dark-skinned black male, approximately 6'0 and 160 pounds, asked to see his phone. At that point, according to the victim, the robber asked for him to turn over the phone or he would shoot him. No gun was displayed and the perpetrator fled with the phone in an unknown direction.

On Wednesday September 7, at approximately 12:30am, a 47-year-old male was the victim of a car jacking while parked in front of 1086 Bedford Ave. The victim reported that while he was sitting in his 2004 Porsche, an unknown black male knocked on his car window and asked for the time. At this point, the male displayed a firearm and ordered the  victim out of the car. The suspect then took off with the car in an unknown direction.

On September 9, at approximately 10:00pm, a female patron checked her purse with employees that work at the "LAB" night club, located at 1428 Fulton St. Upon returning to claim her purse, the woman noticed the some of the contents of her purse were missing. The female victim reported $1,000, an iPhone and assorted credit cards missing from the purse.     

Shooting:  

On Saturday, September 10, at approximately 1:30am, four people --3 males, ages 18, 19 and 29; and one female, age 19 -- were shot in front of 474 Madison Avenue. All four victims were congregating in front of the building, when an unknown black male fired a gun in their direction striking all four victims. The perpetrator fled east bound on Madison, across Marcus Garvey Boulevard. All four of the victims sustained non life-threatening injuries and were taken to Kings County Hospital. An exact motive is yet to be determined, an ongoing investigation continues by the 79th Pct Detective Squad.
