Police Blotter: A Burglarly, a Gang Assault and 3 Shootings

A weekly roundup of police activity and crime incidents in the 79th Precinct

For the week of March 28 to April 3, 2011, the 79th Precinct experienced a 53 percent overall increase in crime (40 incidents vs 26 incidents), compared to this same time last year. For the month, the 79th Precinct experienced a 9 percent overall increase in crime, (131 incidents vs 120 incidents), compared to this same month last year.

Commercial Burglary  

On Monday, March 28, a burglary of a pharmacy was reported at 410 Tompkins Ave. Unknown perpetrators entered this store while it was closed by drilling a hole in the side of the building. $5000 cash and $5000 worth of Lottery Tickets were reported stolen.

Gang Assault  

On Friday, April 1, at approximately 3:00 pm, in front of 159 Halsey Street, two 17-year-old females were attacked and assaulted by four known female perpetrators after a dispute that erupted in school.  The 79th Precinct school team and members on patrol expeditiously responded and placed the 4 females under arrest and charged them with gang assault.

3 Shootings

On Saturday April 2, 2011, there were three separate shooting incidents:  

At approximately 1:30 pm, a black male, 26, was shot and killed inside of the lobby of 415 Lafayette Ave (Lafayette gardens Houses). The motive of this shooting is still under investigation.  

At approximately 9:35 pm, a black male, 37, was shot once in the right elbow while walking on Tompkins Ave at the corner of Jefferson Ave. This victim states a group of about 10 - 15 males were disputing when one brandished a gun firing, striking him in the elbow. The motive is undetermined and the investigation continues.  

At approximately 11:30 pm, a black male, 23, was shot once in the left shoulder while walking in front of 785 Marcy Ave (between Gates and Quincy). The 79th Pct and the 77th Pct Detective Squad were on the scene within seconds of the shooting incident. Members of the 77th Pct Detective squad observed the shooter fleeing the location. They apprehended this male and recovered a .45 caliber semi automatic firearm. Investigation into this shooting continues.
