A roundup of activity in the 79th and 81st Precincts in Bed-Stuy

79th Precinct

The 79th Pct is reporting a 25 percent decrease in major crimes this month, 21 versus 28 at this same time in 2010. For the year so far, the precinct is reporting a 14 percent decrease,  107 versus 125.

Attempted Commercial Robbery

On Wednesday, February 2, at 5:30 pm, an attempted robbery took place inside of a bodega, located at 404 Marcus Garvey Boulevard. A black male in his late 20's, approximately 5'10" with a muscular build entered the store, displayed a black handgun and demanded money. When the perpetrator reached over the counter, two store owners struck him. The perpetrator fled the store without any money.

Purse Snatching

On Sunday, February 6, at 5:00 am, a female was walking southbound on Nostrand Ave near Greene Ave when two unidentified males approached her from behind and snatched her bag off of her shoulder. The males fled on foot and are still at large.

A Robbery at Radio Shack

On February 6th, at 3:15 pm, a person assaulted a store employee and attempted to remove a GPS the Radio Shack located at 1232 Fulton Street. The 34-year-old suspect was arrested.   

Rash of Auto Break in's and air bag thefts

From February 2 through February 5, four vehicles were broken into in the northwest area of the 79th Pct. In all cases, air bags were removed: 

- 805 Bedford Ave- Type of car- Chrysler

- 874 Bedford Ave- Type of Car- Honda

- 30 Spencer Place- Type of car- Honda

- 805 Bedford Ave - Type of car- Honda  

 

81st Precinct

Male Shot and Arrested

On February 1, at 3:45 pm, an Arab male, 26, was shot in the the shoulder and arm in front of 332 Vernon Avenue. Police say the incident appears to be a family dispute. They have identified the suspects and are now looking for the suspects. After a search of the victim's car, police found ammunition and then placed the victim under arrest.

Suspicious Shooting

On Wednesday February 9th, 2011, at  2:00 am, police responded to a 911 call of shots fired in front of 50 Stuyvesant Ave.When police arrived on the scene, they observed the victim, a black male, identified as Laron James, 26, with three gunshot wounds to his chest and two gunshot wounds to his left leg. EMS responded and transported James to Woodhull hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are questioning his friend who was with him during the incident and who also is responsible for taking the victim out of his home at 2:00 am. His friend was not hit.
