Police Blotter: Two Shootings, a Rape and a Robbery

A weekly roundup of crime activity in the 81st Precinct

Crime is down 27 percent in the 81st Precinct (27 incidents versus 37 incidents) for the week September 26 - October 2, compared to this same week in 2010. Crime is down 33 percent for the month (97 incidents versus 145), compared to this same 28-day period last year. And crime is up 1.3 percent year-to-date (1,042 incidents versus 1,029 incidents), compared to this same time period last year, in 2010.

2 Shootings:

On Thursday, October 13, at approximately 12:30pm, a 19-year old man was shot three times in the leg on the corner of Howard Avenue and McDougal Street. According to police, the shooting seems to have stemmed from an earlier dispute. Two men involved in the dispute with the victim later approached him on the street and one of them shot at the victim. Police were able to catch up to the suspect, apprehended the gun and arrested him. The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital.

On Friday October 7, at approximately 2:30pm, a 27-year-old man was shot once in the arm on the corner of Hancock Street and Saratoga Avenue. The man said he was riding his bike when he heard shots and felt pain and then collapsed. The victim would not provide a description of the shooters, but according to police, the incident surrounded a drug deal and the victim knew his attackers. Police were able to a catch and apprehend the shooter. The victim was transported to Kings County Hospital.

A Rape:

A 39-year-old woman reported she was raped Wednesday morning, October 12, at approximately 5:00am. According to the victim, she had just left a friend's home and was walking past a store on Greene Avenue, when she stopped momentarily because she said she was dizzy. At that point, she was grabbed by an unknown male from behind and pulled into a basement where he raped her at gunpoint. The woman could not provide a description of the rapist, because she said it was dark, and she could not see him. She was transported to Woodhull Hospital where she was treated. The investigation is ongoing.

A Robbery:

On Thursday, October 6, at approximately 3:30am, a cab driver was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting when he was dispatched to an address in Bed-Stuy. According to the cab driver, when he arrived at the address, an unidentified black male pointed a gun at him and demanded his money. The cab driver then tried to speed off at which point the suspect shot into his car. The cab driver escaped unharmed. Police arrived at the location and inspected the units of the building where the call was made and recovered two firearms. However, they are still looking for the suspect, and the investigation is ongoing.
