Compactor Catches Fire in Roosevelt Houses

There were no reported injuries.

Twelve fire units and sixty firemen rushed to the Eleanor Roosevelt Houses at 953 Dekalb Avenue and Lewis Avenue, after a fire started in the building's trash compactor at approximately 11:30 am.

Smoked consumed nearly every floor of the 18-story housing development sending tenants who were unclear of the fire's origin pouring out into the courtyard.

According to the New York Fire Department, the fire was placed under control at 12:04 pm. There were no reported injuries and they are unclear about how the fire started.

"As far as we can see, there was no incinerator in the trash compacter," said a spokesman for the fire department. "These types of things occur often, but at this time, it is not clear how it started. We should have a full report by tomorrow."
