Bed-Stuy Man Arrested, Charged with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

Subject in possession of large amount of controlled substance.

A Bed-Stuy man was arrested at approximately 4 a.m. Saturday, after a struggle with a Sergeant and a Police Officer conducting an anti-crime patrol in the vicinity of Quincy Street and Malcom X Blvd. within the confines of the 81 Precinct, police officials said.

The officers observed a 2003 beige Lincoln Town Car (registered with the Taxi and Limousine Commission) traveling eastbound on Quincy Street at a fast speed, police officials said. The plainclothes officers stopped the car and approached displaying their shields. The officers noticed the livery cab was not equipped with the required partition and that one of the two passengers "was adjusting their waistband area."

The driver of the livery was told by the Police Officer the reason for the stop, officials said, and the passengers were asked to step out of the vehicle.

While speaking to the rear passenger side male, officials said, the Sergeant "observed a bulge" in the male passengers waistband area, and conducted a "safety frisk." The Sergeant felt a gun, officials said, and instructed the male to place his hands behind his back. The suspect began to violently struggle, officials said. The officer came to the aid of the Sergeant, while also calling for back up units, and the driver side rear passenger fled the scene.

During the struggle the suspect pulled out his loaded .38 Caliber revolver and pressed it against the Sergeants stomach, officials said. The sergeant grabbed the gun while the suspect pulled the trigger several times. The sergeant then wedged his right ring finger between the hammer and cylinder of the gun, preventing it from firing. Uniformed patrol officers responding to the officers call for assistance arrived and assisted the officers in arresting the still violently struggling suspect.
