4 People Rescued from Basement Fire on Madison St

Fire officials are still investigating the cause

Fire officials are investigating an early morning fire on Madison Street where four people were rescued and at least one was treated for series injuries.

According to fire officials, the fire broke out Friday morning at around 5:46 a.m. in the basement of a three-story private dwelling at 823 Madison Street, between Ralph and Howard avenues.

Approximately 12 firetrucks and 60 firemen arrived on the scene at 5:49 a.m. Tenants from the building's upper floors were able to escape the thick smoke engulfing the building. But four people were still trapped inside the basement.

The fire fighters were able to rescue all four tenants who were rushed to Woodhull hospital. Three were treated for non life-threatening injuries related to smoke inhalation. One remains in serious condition.

The fire was placed under control at 6:31 a.m. Fire officials are investigating the cause.
