4-Alarm Fire Tears Through Pratt Institute Early Friday Morning

A raging four-alarm fire broke out on the top floor of a main building at the Pratt Institute's Clinton Hill campus early Friday morning. 

An FDNY official said the roof of 200 Willoughby Ave. partially collapsed during the blaze, which started around 2 a.m. and took 39 units and 168 firefighters to put out. 

The fire was put out at 4:11 a.m., an FDNY official said. 

There were no significant injuries reported, but two firefighters sustained minor injuries while putting out the fire. One resident also sustained minor injuries, but did not want to be treated. 

Fire marshals are investigating the fire as potentially suspicious due to the building typically being unoccupied after 9 p.m.

A statement on Pratt Institute's website noted the building's roof and its sixth floor were gutted. The fifth floor, which includes an art studio, was badly damaged by the fire and there is water damage throughout the building, the statement said.

The historic main building, which was built in 1887, houses fine art classes and studios in addition to administrative offices. 

Classes have been cancelled in main building and the adjoining south hall for Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16.

Council Member Letitia James, D-35, reported the school is accepting donations at www.pratt.edu/give.

"I would first like to express relief that no one was significantly injured in today’s unfortunate fire," James said. "I thank the fire department for their hard work this morning, and I offer my assistance to the administration, faculty, and students of Pratt Institute at this time."
