Why a Poetry Organization in Crown Heights?

Many do not know the story of why Green Earth Poets Café was created. On a cold October night at 1:00 am in 2011 I heard 6-8 loud gun shots right underneath my window. Awakened out of a deep sleep I looked out the window to see a young man ...name CJ laying on the ground about to die. His friend was yelling at CJ to not die but to keep his eyes open. All to no avail. CJ lay on the cold ground for the next 5 hours while the police crime scene examiners, and other authorities did their job. Before that night I had only heard of the shootings and death that was inflicted on our children by our children and others. At that moment I vowed I would do whatever I could do to help our kids and community. I joined the local community board in Crown Heights, have been an active member ever since and decided to enroll in Graduate school to learn how to become a galvanizing force for social change in our community. Fast forward to August 2013 and Trayvon Martin. That was the straw that broke the camels back. I decided we needed a voice to articulate our concerns in a professional artistic way without violence. We had our first poetry open mic Aug 2013 A tribute to Trayvon. Join us Nov 30th as we continue to find our voice through poetry, visual art and comedy.
