The Big Mzungu of Kilwa Kivinje at Dixon Place!

"This story happened to my father it did not happen to me -

Indirectly, it worked its way through to me.

Beginning where these things begin, somewhere in the middle, that is -"

- The Narrator, The Big Mzungu of Kilwa Kivinje

The Big Mzungu of Kilwa Kivinje is a new play that tells the story of a wealthy New Yorker who brings the body of his Tanzanian wife back to her homeland for burial.  Along the way, the ground opens under the car he travels in and begins to swallow it into the Earth.

Blending raw storytelling and fantastic fable, live music and movement, The Big Mzungu of Kilwa Kivinje is an ambitious project that addresses the politics of our deaths, homes and dreams from a drastically personal level.

Who is Theatre In Exile?

Theatre in Exile is a new theatre company based in Brooklyn, NY, whose purpose is to uncover timeless and hyper-immediate narratives of global relevance with a socio-political context that lives in the spirit of the time.

Founded in the winter of 2013 by writer and director Samuel James Wilson, TIE was designed to give artists greater autonomy in the structural and visual development of the pieces they are called to work on.  By allowing artists greater freedom, we encourage risk taking and imagination, turning our view towards the origins of theatre as a living art created by all humans that crosses ideology, borders, time and space.
