For countless people who have experienced job loss or an unexpected financial setback, the American Dream has become an American nightmare. Emmy®-winning filmmakers Joe and Harry Gantz feature eight struggling families who called into “211info” in Portland, OR, a referral hotline that connects callers with community resources and social services, in “American Winter.” The film aired on HBO in March 2013.
Right now, almost 50 million Americans are officially living in poverty, the largest number in our history. This includes 16.1 million children. About one in six people receive food stamps.
The Green Party and a representative from Hunger Action Network will discuss these issues and how people can get involved in a Q&A following the film.
