Surprise Construction an Inconvenience, But May Lead to Better Water

Phase-3 of the project just started and will finish at the end of December

Bed-Stuy Patch received a tip from a reader regarding sudden construction on Hancock Street between Nostrand and Marcy Avenues in which workers were moving large wires from out of the ground, thereby bottlenecking traffic and affecting parking.

The reader added that no one from the community board nor block association were given advance notice about this construction.

Even more frustrating, none of the workers on-site for the company, Triumph Construction, were able to answer any questions about the length of their project and for what reason they were there, because no one spoke English.

BSP did a little investigating of its own…

The workers are sub-contractors for Con Edison, and according to Sara Banda, spokesperson for Con Edison, the workers are conducting “duct work,” pulling cable from the area in preparation for a water and sewage upgrade.

“There are various public improvement projects Con Edison is involved in throughout the city, and this is one of them,” said Banda to Patch. “The City of New York is spearheading an upgraded water and sewage project, but before they can do infrastructure upgrades, there has to be enough room for them to work.”

Currently, workers are on phase-three of 3 phases, which includes the intersections of Hancock Street and Jefferson Avenue, between Nostrand and Marcy, said Banda.

The workers will be in the area between now and the end of December, pulling up cable, working Monday through Friday, from 7:00am – 4:00pm on the main streets and from 7:00am – 6:00pm on the sides streets.

“Moving forward, we will work with each neighborhood’s community board to provide more information, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Banda said.
