Public School in Queens Adopts All-Vegetarian Menu

P.S. 244 in Flushing becomes the first in the city to begin serving meals with no meat

Active Learning Elementary School (P.S. 244) in Flushing, Queens is now the first public school in the city to go all-vegetarian.

The meatless menu evolved over time and after consultation with parents, and so far the students are giving it rave reviews.

Principal Robert Groff said Tuesday the kids gravitated on their own toward menu items with all-veggie offerings, including black beans and cheddar quesadillas, roasted potatoes, tofu wraps, vegetarian chili with brown rice and falafels.

The school dropped flavored milk from its drink choices two years ago after students pointed out the sugar content on the milk’s nutrition label, a change that earned the school a special recognition in 2011 from President Bill Clinton.

New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, a health food enthusiast himself, said he's proud of the "trailblazing" school.
