NWS Issues Tornado Watch for NYC

Conditions are right not just for a hurricane, but a tornado, too.

As if the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene wasn't excitement enough, the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for New York City.

The watch went into effect at 6:55 p.m., and is set to expire at 4 a.m.

A "watch" differs from a "warning" in that a watch indicates that while conditions may be ripe for dangerous weather, such weather is not necessarily an immediate threat. A "warning" - like the hurricane warning the city is currently under - means that severe weather is imminent.
