New Report Zeroes In On Graffiti Hotspots

New York Daily News charts problem areas for tagging

by Matthew Hampton

Seen any graffiti tags in your neighborhood lately? It's an epidemic that isn't new for city residents, but the New York Daily News took a shot at mapping out the problem areas in Brooklyn this week.

As the map indicates, over the last three years, trouble spots have been concentrated in Williamsburg, Bed-Stuy and Red Hook, with smatterings in other areas.

The Daily News highlighted one Borough Park building that had been visited by the city's clean-up crew 14 times.

The city has cleaned up more than 22,000 graffiti tags throughout the five boroughs in the last three years, the paper reported, with more than 100 arrests for tagging taking place in Brooklyn alone.

The city has also instituted a new punishment for those caught tagging — sentencing them to paint anti-violence murals, instead.
