Mummies, a Baby Bat and More at Prospect Park Zoo

5-Week-Old joins haunted barn and other attractions at 'Boo at the Zoo'

This year, a baby Rodrigues fruit bat will join the crew of Vampires, Mummies and other spooky things at the Prospect Park Zoo’s “” event.

The 5-week-old bat still spends her days nursing under her mother’s protective wings, but mom periodically stretches, so if you're patient, you should be able to get a look, said Denise McClean, the zoo’s director.

The zoo has been doing the Halloween extravaganza since 1993, and it vies with May’s as the most popular event.

For most, the day’s highpoint is the Haunted Barn, McClean said, in which a fog machine, mummy, headless horseman, vampire and other characters replace the animals in the stalls. (But after the show, the characters come say hello to make sure the kiddos don't leave freaked out.)

There are also more playful attractions, including the chance to watch baby baboons dig for treats inside pumpkins, Halloween-themed arts and crafts, face painting, a play about “creepy creatures and a witches potion,” Halloween stories and spooky games.
